Went to a brilliant talk yesterday by Will from It's Nice That, where they've taken the conscious decision to remove the ability to comment on individual posts (perhaps learning from CR), but leave a discussion board where users have to log in via Twitter. Context is everything, so if you see a comment you find interesting or disagreeable, you can (in theory) click through to get a better sense of the person behind the lines.

thanks for those links. yes, i also find the idea that through designing an environment you in turn create a certain type of social order/ behaviour an interesting one. i saw this yesterday and thought it was a good example of that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivg56TX9kWI

Interesting article Neil. I'm sure you're familiar with Goffman's work – http://www.amazon.co.uk/Presentation-Self-Everyday-Life/dp/0140135715 – his analysis of the presentation of self is very much relevant today. Chris Messina has also been talking about this a lot recently – http://factoryjoe.com/blog/.

Identity's one of those things of the fringes of UX work that I think we should be paying more attention to. As you point out, one of the reasons for Facebook's tidier environment is that people can't hide behind a pseudonym. You get the behaviour you design for, and all that…
